End of Year 2 Trimester 2
Friday, April 21, 2017

I barely survived the previous trimester.

Everyone was slogging day in day out and my gaming hours plummeted like United Airline's stock. [link] My grades weren't terrible but my feelings were. Cramming knowledge in the day, Skype meetings at night; that's the routine for most of my friends.

The first couple of weeks was fine, but then it suddenly escalated and we didn't have a breather for approximately 9 weeks *insert too damn high meme*. Even though it was tough, I'm glad to say that we did manage to build some decent software at least.

1. Android application that detects exercise
2. Crowd sourced story writing web platform
3. Multi-cast chat application (invite/leave/kick/register/switch)
4. Hadoop Map Reduce Twitter analyzer

Shot and edited 2 videos in the process of doing all those.

1. Android showcase [link]
2. Foley (sound design self-learning mod*)
*it's about pedagogy and I'm too lazy to explain it

Apart from the school work itself, I've also gotten more familiar with how Docker works and can host simple web applications on my server (which I now realize I totally forgot to write about).

Also managed to pick up a part time job for the school; can't really say much about it but at least there's a small income for it.

I closed my eyes and thought hard about the past 3-4 months, thinking if there's any interesting/funny story that I could share and write down for me to remember. But I came up with nothing. It was just really tiring throughout, dealing with people, bugs, and deadlines. I felt like I died a little on the inside dealing with the people.

Not all teammates are bad of course, but the ones that are; they're  freakin' terrible. Sometimes it's just easier to do it alone, or with one other friend that you can trust to have your back.

Moving on, my exams ended 2 days ago.
I've done pretty much nothing but play games for the past 2 days and I think I'm getting a little bored with the games. Going to work on my personal project tomorrow and hope that I can get it working.

Oh and tech stuffs that I've gotten myself in the past couple of months!

1. Cooler Master MasterKeys L Pro White (brown switches)
2. Cooler Master TKL wrist rest
3. Withings Activité Pop watch (activity tracker)
4. Clear screen protector for MBP 13" 2015
5. Braided USB cable

I guess I should work towards being more thrifty in the coming months. (unless there's an insane sale going on)

The Withings Activité Pop retails at $259 and there was an online sale for $99, couldn't miss such a deal. But the high quality version went on sale the next week for ~$126 and I totally regretted getting the lower quality one. Well, you win some you lose some.

Alright this has been a really boring post, more note to myself honestly. Till the next time.

Challenge me
Thursday, November 10, 2016

The title ended up sounding more aggressive than it really is but that's what I want. Lately I've been getting pretty frustrated over discussions with my group mates. It's not that they are always wrong, in fact, they often have better ideas than me; but they are not willing to argue about it.

They either just let me have my way, or ignore my protests thinking that I'm wrong. Neither of which really helps us get things done effectively. I really don't know if I'm overly aggressive when it comes to arguing points, but I hate it when people think I'm wrong but are unwilling to step up and tell it to my face. Just convince me and the rest that you are right, and we can change course immediately.

It's really not that hard is it?

FFT: Feeling good for not doing a bad thing
Friday, August 26, 2016

I had this conversation with my girlfriend recently, she was telling me about her work and how there's this bitch who hasn't been doing her work properly and she has to cover up for her all the time. (gross generalisation but let's just roll with it)

Her boss is aware of the situation so she prompted her about it and she is finally able to give some feedback about her colleague's poor work conduct. She mostly agreed with her boss's opinion without adding too much fuel to the flame, leaving out the incriminating parts that will probaly set her boss on a witch-hunt.

As she told me about it, I realized that she is actually proud that she held back; happy that she is the bigger person.

The thing is, why are we always happy when we stopped ourselves from doing a bad thing? It's like, we thought of it in the first place, just one step away from fulfilling it.

Stay with me here, I thought of this because of a book I read sometime back called, "hyperbole and a half". The book is more or less a compilation of all the posts on it's website.

Near the end of the book there's this chapter where the author explores him/herself, and found out that "I'm a shittier person than I thought I am".

One of the examples quoted loosely is when you see an annoying kid making a ruckus and just wouldn't shut up for the love of god. I would feel an urge to carass his face, violently, with a brick. Of course I wouldn't do that, not for many reasons other than the law. I would then feel "good" about myself for being the bigger man and not venting my angst upon that little devil.

Or a more random situation like, being at a sandy playground and having the urge to hurl sand at someone, just for the fun of it. I don't know why there's even such an urge but I surpressed it, then I feel good that I did not do a bad thing. But the fact that the thought even cross my mind isn't anything "good" don't you think? A proper good person shouldn't be thinking of random shit like that to do.

Which is the point of such a lengthy post, that we are all shittier than what we perceive ourselves to be*
*for most people anyway, unless you're a born saint.

I was just amused that what the author described happened exactly in real life, and I was able to witness it from a 3rd person point of view. If it was me behaving that way, I would definitely not been able to spot it out.

In conclusion, not committing to a bad thing you've thought of isn't exactly something worth feeling good about.

Merry fucking Christmas!
Thursday, December 25, 2014

I officially had one of the unluckiest work week of the year. I can't believe I'm having muscle aches from work and not from some kind of exercise. As such, if the design of the blog changed the tomorrow, you would know what I've done on Christmas; else I should probably be heading out soon.

This is the season to be jolly, fa la la la la~! La la la la~!
Disclaimer: I'm going to whine like fuck

18/12 (Thu) : Finally back for good from my long break. But because I'm currently in the active unit I could be activated any time and the tanks we're in charge of cannot be down for more than a day. Firstly, I was changing out the batteries for our own tank.

Whoever the fuck took them out the previous day didn't label the wires. Got a diagram from a dude and fixed according to it. When it came down to the last 2 wires, I realized that the diagram is fucking wrong. You think, "It's just batteries what! How hard can it be?"

Eh, fuck you understand.

There's 4 of them, each weighing up to 39kg each. We have to lift it up to a height of >2.0m, then lower it down, and slot it in within a confined space where you have to squat in a fucked up position and have to use strength. Not to mention that it's dark inside and a torchlight is mildly helpful at best. (because it was raining it is really fucking dark)

When I figured out that the diagram was wrong and was going to rectify it, got activated to help out with the vehicles that cannot be down (which will henceforth be known as FSV [fucking suay vehicle] ).

Some guys where doing servicing for the FSV and it was down to the transmission filter which is the most fucked up design you will ever meet. The person who design this should really just shoot himself in the head. It's hard to explain/describe the process but just know that you need a combination of strength, finesse, patience and endurance to replace the filter. Oh and also tolerance for pain/itch as the tiny fibre glass fragments will get embed in your skin as you rub against the exhaust pipes.

In the end, it was done after working overtime.

19/12 (Fri) : Nope. turns out that the transmission filter thing that we did yesterday leaked. Luckily, it wasn't due to me. Unfortunately, I have to fix it. I wouldn't blame anyone for it as it's really just fucking bad luck that such a thing happened. I then got briefed that it was cross threading that caused it to leak.

What's cross thread? The hole that a screw goes in has threading right? The threading in the hole got crossed, so it's fucked up and the screw can't go in fully.

Why is this a bad thing? Because the fucking transmission costs $500,000. We tried rethreading the hole which is a really high level task and no one ever did that for a transmission before. It didn't come as a surprise when we just flat out failed and gave up. Due to certain requirements, we had no choice but to swap the FSV for one of our own vehicles.

All these took an entire day so it speaks to how difficult it was. Oh yes I forgot to mention, I was down with flu, as well as yesterday.

20/12 (Sat) : Because my flu didn't get better I missed my friend's dance performance. Sigh.

21/12 (Sun) : City Harvest. I shall keep the rest of the comments to myself. Relieved stress today even though I had to go back to camp at night.

22/12 (Mon) : Had some talk in the first half of the day. The only thing I've learnt from it was,
卖靠北,靠自己
(first part in hokkien, go figure)
The next half of the day was bowling but guess what, I couldn't go for it due to guard duty. It isn't that bad, except that the system totally changed and we got blind-sided by it. Not to mention the uncountable dogs roaming our camp, barking/charging at us randomly.

23/12 (Tue) : Guard rest is until 10am. When I woke up at 940 I saw the message on my phone saying that my boss extended mine and J's rest until 12. I thought, "Fuck yes!". It's just second later that he turned my smile upside down. Apparently we have to swap engines. It's as hard as it sounds, too troublesome to elaborate any more on it.

We are swapping out the engine for the FSV as we need to put it back into service as fast as possible. So we used a working tank in our arsenal and cannibalized it. We had half a day to do the swap, which means preparing our own tank, and the FSV for the swap, removing the FSV's engine, and putting in the other engine, reconnect everything and put on the top deck.

It's doable, and we did it by 5+pm. But guess what, one of the connectors from the fuel line broke.

So... fuck it. We leave it for tomorrow.

24/12 (Wed) : Early in the morning we got scolded by the boss of my boss for leaving the FSV out of it's designated area. Like, "why didn't you finish it yesterday?". LIKE WE DIDN'T WANT TO. Son of a mother bitch only know how to cover his own backside.

Today is Christmas eve so it's half day.

We've had until 12 to complete our task (roughly 3+ hours). Which means lifting the top deck, replacing the broken connector from the fuel supply line (something no one did before), put back the top deck, reconnect up and be done with it.

We did it by 11:10. Everyone heaved a sigh of relieve and gave a half assed cheer as we packed up the area and prepared to get the hell out of this place.

20 mins later, we got activated yet again. Apparently they closed the ramp door with human strength while the engine wasn't installed, so the cable isn't properly tensioned. I did not know about this as I wasn't there when they did it. My boss wasn't around due to his grandma's funeral, he forgot to mention it and my 2IC also forgot about it.

The moment some dude unlocked the ramp catch, the door just fucking fell to the ground, breaking the steel cable and linkages around it.

Sigh.

Fortunately nobody was near it or someone could've died. I'm not sure how heavy the ramp door is, it was attached to a hinge and it took 8 men to lift it.

The steel cable looked like it freaking exploded, the ends were frayed and it looks like fireworks. Here's the kicker though, we can't leave it alone. It must be fixed by today no matter what. So... for better or for worse, I stayed back along with 2 other guys. Let's just say that this is another task that no one had done before. I mean, we could roughly tell what steps needed to be done based on experience but no one had done it.

Hence began the overtime when we fumbled around with the mechanism figuring out how it worked, how to remove and replace it. We wasted more than an hour finding a replacement part some dude tell us we definitely had, we couldn't find it. So we resorted to cannibalizing our own working vehicle yet again.

By the time we removed both tank's ramp cable mechanism it was about 330pm.
It then rained.

We had a choice, wait, and waste time; or do it now, in the rain. We chose the latter. The rain got heavier and heavier until it became a downpour; though we tried our best to work within the tank, we still got drenched.

It was until the last part, where we had to connect the cable to the ramp door that we realized a fatal lack of foresight. We didn't have enough people. There's no way we can lift it up with just 3 people. Well, 2 because one needs to attach the cable. I had to go and ask favours from some guys doing their duty. Managed to get 3 more, turns out 5 men isn't enough. We managed to lift it with roughly 8, honestly though I didn't bother counting but, eh~

Being the man tasked with connecting the cable, I had a mini panic attack when I couldn't slot the bolt through, because everyone else is withstanding the weight of the ramp door while I fumbled around and tried hammering it in with my fist. As it turns out, my fist is not a hammer, it took me 5 seconds to realize my futile efforts and quickly grab a hammer somewhere around me and started pounding it like a mad man until it went in. And trust me, 5 seconds is a really long time when you're holding that piece of shit.

By the time I reached home, it was 730pm. Which means I missed out on the guys' meet up at 630 and honestly I was really too tired to go.

25/12 (Thu) : Today.
All that explains my lack of enthusiasm in going out today. We'll see.

Regardless, Merry fucking Christmas guys.

Insomnia: Gray area
Monday, September 08, 2014

I've been thinking lately. Correction, I've been thinking about this for a rather long time. How can I better myself each day using reasonable amount of effort? You know, without putting in too much; note my awesome tag line. (Scroll up if you don't know what that is)

Sometimes it's not who you are that determines what you do, but what you do that determines what kind of person you are. (Maybe it's not sometimes but all the time, just bear with me for this rant) It takes quite a bit of will power to do something I don't want to do, even when I think it's right. Which summons this same thought every single time, "who gives a shit?". Am I the only retard caught up in his own self-righteous crusade?

"What matters is what you do when no one is looking."

I've seen that quote many times over. It makes sense morally, but honestly? I find it extremely hard to accomplish. We've all seen articles about the unsung heroes of society; but the fact that such a thing is written is that someone noticed. If what you can do something that is beneficial to others, but not a single soul knows about it, would you still do it?

Not many people seems to appreciate that nothing bad happening is probably one of the best things that could happen.

For example, if you see a slippery banana peel that's on the floor and someone could slip and fall on it; would you pick it up and throw it away? (No one will ever, ever know)

If you answered yes, then how far would it have to be before you go, "nah that's much effort", even though you wish someone else would do it? Maybe a pile of dog poop?

If you've ever dropped bits of food accidentally on the table while eating, do you clear it up when you're done or fuck it and "let the cleaner do his job"? Little things like this where no one will ever notice. Occasionally, I fall prey to my own laziness as well.

For some reason I feel like I'm starting to side track. Anyway the point is that lately it feels like I'm spending way too much time balancing between being awesome, and fucked up.

Why am I even doing that in the first place you ask?
There's too many to choose from and there really isn't a main reason that is good enough. So I'll try the closest ones.

I don't like being taken advantage of. I also can't stand idle while my friends slog away. So I do what I can just enough to be helpful/useful, but not so much that I'm essential. And the fact that I can rationalize that so clearly makes it pretty screwed up in itself. I really hate my ability to judge myself from a 3rd person's view.

Maybe it's also because of all the fucked up kinds of people around me lately. They are definitely not making me want to try any harder. Cue my judgmental self again. Just because someone is shit, doesn't mean I have to be shit as well. Sounds simple enough, ain't it?

No it really isn't.
(At least for me)

Imagine you have a friend who is constantly late, do you still arrive on time for him or do you come later? Just because he is late doesn't mean you have to be. Just because you got hit doesn't mean it's okay to hit him back. That is probably one of the hardest thing for me to do. There's something innate about retribution, or as I call it ,"instant karmafication".

But there are times when I managed to hold back. The times when I ask myself, "really? REALLY?!" My morals and self-righteousness ain't worth two shits. It's hard letting someone off without seeing them get bitch slapped to the face with a giant steaming hot rod of justice.

I'm just frustrated recently. Or maybe I'm still high from all the flu medications. Or maybe its just my insomnia acting up again.

In the end, does it really matter what you do? If you were to trample all over someone, look back in retrospect and say to yourself, "I did a great job" and give yourself a pat on your back;

If you're satisfied,
ain't that good enough?

Random thoughts at a random time
Tuesday, September 02, 2014

I was originally going to sleep, and free myself from all the fatigue and muscle aches. However, after watching the season one finale of Gokusen, it kinda kicked me back into this thinking mode.

The mode where I wonder, "What the hell am I doing with my life?"

I feel like I have these internal thoughts way too often, but when you're stuck in the army doing things that you don't want to do; thoughts like these have their way of creeping up to you at the most unexpected timings.

The show Gokusen is about a teacher leading her delinquent class through graduation. Firstly, it really made me miss my school days where I had fun and did stupid things with all my friends. Secondly, it made me think about where I should head from now in life. The things that I should really put effort in instead of just stumbling  through the days.

Fortunately, I was assigned some projects that allowed me to stretch my rusting skills a little, bringing me back to my passion. But that also made me realize how long I spent not putting any effort into my passion. Interestingly, because of the project requirements, I picked up a new programming language: C#. Along with some .NET stuffs and SQL.

I guess there really isn't any point worrying about it. After all. I am at a crossroad in life. I simply have more time to think about it rather than making that important choice quickly like most people have to.

As much as I can't wait to get out of the army (9 months and counting down), the life ahead out of this place really isn't the heaven I envisioned it to be. The chore of making
decisions that could make or break your life, I really need to start working on it.

Fight on!

Busy man
Monday, May 19, 2014

Man, I have so much stuff to blog about I just can't seem to find the time for it. Let's start with 2 weeks ago, where I flew off to bangkok on Thursday and came back on Sunday.

Followed by cohesion on Monday at sentosa, one day to rest on Tuesday (Vesak Day), work on Wednesday, followed by my ATP(live firing) from Thursday to Saturday; which I didn't get marksman for and was really kicking myself for it. Reached home really late, woke up on Sunday with half the day gone and by evening I have to get back to camp again.

Which brings me to today, the start of the new week where our busy schedule is set in stone, all thanks to the 2 audits we're having next week. Its going to test the entire team to get everything done.  Fortunately, thanks to table tennis and guard duty I get to avoid quite a bit of work.

I'm just going to ramble on a bit because I don't have any (edited) pictures to post.

I'm about 1 month away from being a 1 year soldier. I can't believe that it had taken so long for one fucking year to pass. Definitely going to write a post about being in the army for a year. It would be really interesting to read back my old posts and see how I've grown as a person.

Oh I'm not sure if I've already written about this but I'm playing table tennis for CSSCOM (my mother unit); the competition isn't until July but there's a SAFSA(SAF Sports Association) opens that I'm playing in, individually. The awesome part is that they've entered me for both doubles and singles. I must say that I am actually quite excited for this as I've not played competitive in years.

But, and I hate how there's always a but; I'm paired up with a useless imbecile as my partner. Hopefully he won't read this but if you do, come on man, you really suck.

On another note, I finally managed to play a match with the YOG player and it was a rather close match. Though he probably isn't playing at his best but at least I got a feel for how a "professional" player plays. Hopefully I'll be able to win some matches at the competition and secure some off days!

Anyway I think that I've sunken into a bad habit of speaking about doing this and never getting around to doing them. The worst part is that I actually tell people about it. I'm getting quite annoyed and frustrated at myself. The mountain of to-do lists I have on my phone just keeps getting longer by the day and it seems almost impossible to clear them out.

But I'm going to try. One fucking thing at a time.

The Bangkok trip post will probably take a little longer though. I've taken over 150+ short videos and it'll take a rather long time to get them done.  Trying to relearn Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects all over again.

Sometimes people get amused/impressed by the amount of things I can do, or trying to learn to do. Sometimes I just feel like they have the wrong impression because I do so many things so half-assedly.

Meh, I have about 1 year left to put all my free time to good use.

Caught up in my own pace
Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Merry Christmas Eve!

It has been an entire month since I've posted on my blog.

I can't believe that this has happened when I had almost posted everyday religiously in the past. Well, there's many reasons but put simply, I've been more caught up with doing things than recording down the things that I have done.

However, there is something geeky that I've been doing recently and have made quite a bit of progress so I'm here to share it!

Python Programming
a type of programming language

I've wanted to learn it before I enlist in the army but haven't really got round to doing it; one month after getting posted to Kranji Camp, I realized that I have enough free time to actually start studying something I want to, so for the past couple of weeks I've been "indulging" myself in learning Python.

Back to the basics

After getting down all the essentials, I've decided to start writing a game to see how much I have learnt can be applied realistically.

A game?! Yes.

It isn't anything overly complicated though. It's a text based game. You interact with it by typing commands and see what happens. Of course, it runs on the world's most powerful graphic card, your imagination. It's like the old school text based game from the 80s-90s. Kind of like Dungeon and Dragons if you've played before.

Regardless, it's hard to explain what it is until you've seen it before. I'm roughly 30% done with it? Gotten down some of the basics functions like movement and tracking of movement and the end goal. Being a game, there's going to be monsters you'll have to defeat, weapons and whatnot. Oh well, I will write more about it when I'm close to finishing it. Oh and by the way, I have been doing all of these on my phone. The learning, writing and executing of the programs can all be done on Android. This is why I love Android so much. Typing code on a phone can be a hassle, so I did bring a bluetooth keyboard to camp and use it when I can.

So... it's the 24th of December, 7 more days before 2014. I feel like this year passed by without me noticing, I've already been in the army for 6 months. Just another 1.5 years to go.

If there's anything that I've learnt in Kranji Camp, it's that tanks are really heavy. It always feel like one wrong move could sever my fingers. On the brighter note, everyone improves in sports when they are in the army. During my free time in the evening I have been playing basketball almost every single day. Hopefully there's some sort of improvement by now.

Anyway, I have gotten my new phone last month and I am almost ready to write all about it. It's my best/favourite phone thus far. Anyway, here's a random shot that I took today to test out the camera.

iso50 | f/2.0 | 1/500s (post processed)

Haven't really had the chance to play around with the camera much but I will try to do it asap. So far the images gives me somewhat of a film feeling so it's a double thumbs up from me.

Moving on, it's Christmas eve. I've fallen sick so I'm just... trying my best to recover. That fucking flu vaccination that gave me flu, the irony of it man.

Garh, I'm just too tired to write shit now. Soon man, once I get my thoughts over the month organized.

Movie: About Time
Saturday, November 02, 2013

I wonder when was the last time I actually blogged about a movie, or watch a movie. I don't  watch romance movies often but man, this one's really good. Finally met up with Y and caught this movie.

Couple of things
1. Rachel McAdams is really pretty when she smiles.
2. British accent is always awesome.
3. I love time travelling.
4. Love comedy is cute.

The song How Long Will I love You is stuck in my head.

Well, if you haven't seen the trailer yet, it's about a plain guy who lived in a family where all the males could time travel back in time. (not forward) He doesn't use it for good nor evil, but solely to find his true love. The storyline is rather comical in it's own little ways, and the pretty actresses definitely makes it all that much better.

I really don't want to spoil the story so I'll just write about the thoughts it left me with.

There are many points in my life when I wish that I had the ability to time travel, be it for good or evil purposes. Every time I watch/read anything related to it, my mind switches into fantasy mode. At the end of the day, my conclusion is always the same: "Man, I wish I could time travel"

But obviously, I can't. (not yet anyway)

What other choice do I have but to live in the fantasies of the other authors? For this movie, I really like the concept of time travel that they have. There are some things that are set in stone in life; things that you simply cannot change not matter how much you want them to. Of course, these things are probably regrets.

Regrets. I have some sort of a love hate relationship with it. This is going to sound masochistic but sometimes, I feel that the sadness that stems from regrets is kind of beautiful. Not for the types of regrets where the outcomes are certain, for eg. If I had locked my bicycle, it wouldn't be stolen. But for the types where you think, "Had I done otherwise, would it have made a difference?"

What if.

As much as I hate to think about what ifs, I love to think about them too. Spending time to torture my mind with made up scenarios and possibilities.

So anyway, the movie had this tactic of being happy in life.
Live each day as if you have lived them before,
and appreciate the subtleties them.
So each day you wake up to your routine life, go through the motion as if you have went through before. But don't think too much about the actions you make, and enjoy all the little things around you.

On a random note, this post was supposed to be posted last week but then I kind of got distracted half way. I can't believe that my last post was last month. Well, shall try to make up for them with some awesome posts.

Rant: Value your privacy
Saturday, June 08, 2013

If you haven't been updated on the recent saga, here are a couple of articles that you might be interested to read first.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/6/4403868/nsa-fbi-mine-data-apple-google-facebook-microsoft-others-prism
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/06/washington-post-nsa-fbi-tapping-directly-into-servers-of-9-lea/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jun/07/uk-gathering-secret-intelligence-nsa-prism
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/07/report-uk-prism-gchq/

Facebook and Google responded the most aggressive saying that they are not giving governments direct access to your data, and make their stand against this invasion of personal privacy. Again, no matter how pretty the words are, or how technically correct they are, it doesn't change the fact that they are lying through their teeth.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/8/4408622/google-cannot-say-this-more-clearly-no-government-access-to-servers
http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/7/4407648/facebook-like-apple-and-google-hadnt-even-heard-of-prism-says-ceo
http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/8/4408658/former-government-official-nsa-had-no-direct-access-to-tech-company
(reason for using theverge is because they do an excellent job of congregating all the information from all the news websites)

And this is the reason why they are "lying".
http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/7/4408256/tech-companies-reportedly-built-secure-portals-for-government-surveillance

Even though it their PR is technically correct, it doesn't change the fact that they are giving information to the government when requested. I really cannot stand this.

Governments always use phrases like "the fight against terrorism", or "it's for your own safety". Yes, I know that you cannot have 100% protection with 100% privacy, the real world doesn't work like that, but this news is simply outrageous; even more so that it has been sanctioned since 2006.

Politics is always about sugar-coating your words, but all I see is a pile of crap spouted by people who are infringing on human rights. But then again, it's not like the News is the definite truth with words like, "reportedly", who the fuck reported it and where's the chain of trust/proof? I could only assume that everything reported has been striking the red tender spot based on how all the companies and government have been reacting to it.

This is the internet, and most if not all of the top social companies is based in US. Their laws and surveillance doesn't just apply to their country, the whole world is being surveyed with their every keystroke.

And my dear Singaporeans, we are not any better off. This is the new licensing law that has been in effect since June 1st 2013.

http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/singapore/story/new-licensing-scheme-news-websites-reach-50000-people-month-20130528
http://www.zdnet.com/sg/spore-outlines-new-licensing-rule-for-online-news-sites-7000015945/
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/new-mda-licensing-scheme-becomes-fodder-for-singapore-satire-130417193.html

In short, any [news] website that garners more than 50,000 unique visitors from Singapore has to sign an agreement under this framework. This license allows the government to take down any article that they don't deem as "right".

Currently, for now, the list of websites affected are these 10. (they have to pay $50,000 to be in the framework)
straitstimes.com
asiaone.com
businesstimes.com.sg
omy.sg
stomp.com.sg,
tnp.sg,
zaobao.com
as well as the sites for Today newspaper, ChannelNewsAsia and Yahoo News

And so, the government has control over all news. We are effectively silenced and screwed over. Any popular/influential blog that report news will fit into the category and this license might very well expand to include them in the future.

Here's the thing, I've heard people tell me this before.

"If you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to be afraid of."

That is not the fucking point people.

"If I am not doing anything wrong, you have no business snooping around my stuff. Respect my human rights."

It's like having someone stare at you in real life 24/7. They are not causing you any direct harm or inconvenience, but it is creepy as hell and it is just wrong.

We have to do something about it. But I don't know what exactly I can do to change this, so I can only try my best to raise awareness about this increasingly crazy world that we seem to be okay living in.

Writer's block?
Wednesday, May 08, 2013

I realized that I haven't written anything in 5 days. It's not like my mind is completely cock blocked, but I just didn't have the inspiration to write anything at all.

But anyway I went to Johor Bahru last Saturday[4th May] to play Go-kart and Paintball, which... obviously will have a post of it's own, someday. Maybe I've been doing too many things that I don't usually do and my brain is simply taking its time to process all these experiences.

Either way, I need to find back my motivation in life (yet again); and probably learn how to concentrate better on a single task. Maybe I will be able to write something proper if I go off the internet.

p.s. I realize that whenever I reach a point of total boredom, I start pouring all my efforts into my blog. My life must be really shitty now.

Rant: There may be no more rants
Tuesday, March 19, 2013

This blog has always been my go-to place whenever I have something random that I want to talk about; and it will continue to be so.

However, I'm at an impasse. Couple years ago, I choose the name Lord of Geeks because it's awesome and for another reason I haven't disclosed. As you can tell, the acronym of it is LOG. This is a LOG of my thoughts and life. Thoughts are generally abstract, they bear no specific reference to my personal life. If you didn't know, I am very paranoid.

Which is why I keep personal stories to a minimum on this space, which has long been a thorn in the butt.

Hence I have created my personal wordpress server. I have also been writing regularly on it, because I could bitch about anyone I want to. It is simply called log.com. However, only people within my home network will be able to access it, so it's as secure/personal as it can be.

But there are questions that arise,
Is there any point in writing anymore personal things here? Should I just keep things "professional"?

I know that there are still bored friends who come here and read from time to time. But they take up less than 20% of the traffic. Maybe I should simply try to write interesting things that has no relation to the events in my life.

I don't know. Any friends who read this, some opinions will be nice.

p.s It's 3AM. I can't sleep though I'm tired as hell, so I'm typing this with my eyes closed.

Rant: Little sense of urgency
Sunday, February 17, 2013

Thankfully I'm completed and submitted all my projects in time last week. Which means that I am free of all the burdens for the moment, except for the upcoming exams that is. Even though I should be worried about it, very worried in fact, but I just don't sense the urgency.

This is also why I have been blogging properly, and pretty much just lying around. I'm looking to give this blog another overhaul. I still like it a lot, but it lacks something I can't put in words.

So I've been looking through a lot of website designs trying to find some inspiration. There are tons of beautiful designs, unfortunately, most of them are not suited for a blog. There are couple that I found interesting and are in the process of getting some cues here and there.

http://illustratorslounge.com/
http://www.oldguard.co.uk/
http://www.francescoagnoletto.com/

Yes they are all minimalistic, I like it this way. I want to focus on typography, which is something I'm still not very good at.

I'm a little tired, time to end this. Here's something I came across today and it's really good.

Happy Valentine's Day
Thursday, February 14, 2013

What girls? Food please.

I was going to write some crazy far-stretched sexual fantasies, but there will always be that 1% who didn't think I was making a joke. Which resulted in this fairly mundane post.

As you can see, I'm finally back to my regular daily postings; for a good reason too. Tomorrow shall mark the end of 4 my projects, I'm finally able to reclaim whatever little time I have left for myself before the final final exams 2 weeks later. (yes, it's my final, final exam)

Enough sidetracking, what did I do today? Nothing.
(which is making my doubt my attractiveness)

Nah I'm kidding, nothing's ever gonna make me doubt that, there just isn't ample opportunities to prove my worth. Egoistical ramblings aside, it does bores me a little that my life as a student has been rather dull, at least in the love department. Not that it's disastrous or anything, but it could definitely use some excitement to make it interesting.

To all the people who snatched themselves a partner today, congratulations. May you be happy and get laid. And for all the other singles out there,

Rant: I don't gamble
Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Well, technically I don't like to. I try my best to avoid gambling. But as it's the Chinese New Year season, avoiding them becomes a hassle.

While I was hanging out with my friend yesterday, we came up with a quote.

"You need luck to win, but you need skill to not lose."

Which is why I abhor gambling. You're betting on probability. But technically, everything is simply a probability. According to quantum mechanics, you do not exist in a single spot, the probability of you existing in this sport is simply higher  than the rest. When you look at how nothing is certain, life seems like a gamble.

I have to admit that I am intrigued by the idea of earning money based on risk and probability. It's a bad idea, but it's interesting to say the least.

Well, if there comes a day when I'm incredibly proficient at math and probability, you can bet your ass I'm going to make a career out of it.

FFT: Why Zombies are scary
Tuesday, February 12, 2013

That's how I'll fight zombies
Mini-confession: I'm actually quite scared of zombies.

Thankfully, they don't exist. Though it isn't a scientific impossibility. Either way, you don't see them in the streets, unless you're somehow stuck in a movie/game-world.

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
- H. P. Lovecraft
I  completely agree with this. I'm not particularly sure if I'm really that scared of zombies, but because they don't exist, the possibility of them being my worst fear is a fear in itself.

It's similar to horror movies. My balls shrink inwards and disappear when I watch them, because of that unknown element always waiting to fuck your mind up. However, I'm mostly immune to real-life "ghosts" and whatnot. (unless you're talking about a haunted house where people are intentionally trying to scare you, that's a different story). In this case, I'm referring to creepy places, I'm not 100% immune to them, but I don't get as creep out as much as others as I simply do not believe in whatever that cannot exist.

Back to the topic,
I think people are generally afraid of zombies is because they prey on humans. (and all fleshy things)

Think about it for a second, as long as you live in an urban area, you have literally zero predators. There isn't another organism trying to eat you.*
* please ignore all bacteria, viruses, and parasites for the sake of this argument.

If you were to live in Africa, I am pretty sure you'll be scared of a Lion more than a stupid Zombie. The idea of a predator is scary, fortunately, we have evolved far enough to ward away all our natural predators. Hence, we have absolutely zero experience of trying to run away from something that is trying to eat you. However, it's still in our instincts, it's coded in our DNA.

All the movies about Zombies and Alien invasions are all poking at our primate fear of the unknown, and ultimately, getting killed. It's pretty much the fight or flight response that kicks off your adrenaline.

I'm scared of zombies and the idea of it. When I think about a humanoid being chasing after me relentless with full intentions to eat me, it's not a pleasant thought.

But you know, if a Zombie apocalypse ever happens, you'll be happy to know that people have been thinking about it for a long time.

Chinese New Year is amusing
Monday, February 11, 2013

Today is a day for visiting. I have a complicated family and I don't really go visiting in the conventional sense. Though technically both my parents are the biggest so people end up coming. And my relatives actually came, to my surprise. Maybe I was out most of the time, or that I'm too busy doing my own stuffs the other years to notice them.

Well either way, CNY visiting always brings interesting situations. Where people related by blood gather together, but (and there's always a but) everyone is not really that close to everyone else.

Sure, there are probably some families that are really tightly bonded from the nephews to the great grandparents. Where you know all your cousins by name and their age and what they do.

Normal families aren't like that. There are definitely some relatives you don't even know the face of. And sometimes, more often than not, you will end up in an awkward situation where you simply don't know what to do. (or simply have nothing to do except sit there like a fucking moron)

Couple of my friends experienced this today.
And this is probably the first time that 3 different friends asked to come over, for one reason or another. Usually, I would be rather happy, that there's someone to simply chill and hang out with. But I'm rushing my fuck-my-life-4-projects-deadline-this-week. But I ended up inviting one over anyway. It was still awkward for her, but considerably less so than the previous location.*

previous location* - boyfriend's parent's friend's house where everyone is speaking a dialect she doesn't understand. Talk about awkwardness.

Well, I've listened to some very amusing stories, most of which will probably leave my memory sooner than I can finish this sente-.

This has been an interesting Chu Er. I also managed to show off and impress the shit outta my friend. Oh well, sadly I haven't been taking any pictures so here's a random gif to end this with.

Rant: Life is going to get more boring, soon
Thursday, February 07, 2013

I think I mentioned this before, but I don't really have a lot of geeky friends. In fact, the people whom I know that could understand what I do can be counted with a single hand, and I'm not even that close with them.

At the end of this month, my school will end,  but I'm only graduating a little while later. What this means is that I probably wouldn't have anyone to rant to anymore for the geeky things that I do. (because let's face it, engineers have a better chance of exposure to the things I do)

The main point isn't about showing off.

It's about what's interesting. Whenever I find or do something interesting, I hope that someone else would too. It's just like that, for what ever weird or queer reasons you can think of. It's a little bit like painting, if you managed to paint something awesome, you would probably want someone to appreciate, or in a way, approve your efforts.

This may be an over generalization, but I pretty much see life in two options.
Interesting, or non-interesting.

For example, money isn't interesting. Which is why I don't really spend a lot of time thinking about it. But the notion of money is interesting. We somehow gave a worthless piece of paper universal value throughout an entire planet, that is interesting.

Computers are interesting, we make wonderful movies, music and games using only 1s and 0s.

Something far off that is interesting to me; deep sea creatures. The incredible amount of unknown species hidden kilometers under the oceans, that gigantic unexplored territory even though man has ruled the land for thousands of years.

There are a lot of things that interests me, and a lot that don't. The point is that computers are easily accessible and far more realistic than any other crazy endeavours. Well, it's not like anyone would understand anyway.

Seems like I'm going back to the days of meaningless self-gratifications.

Geek: SSH Tunneling fun
Wednesday, January 30, 2013

I have a home VPN set up at home. Which is obviously the elegant, and secure way of connecting to my home network.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned about SSH tunneling sometime ago, how it's considered as a "poor man's VPN". What it does is simply create an SSH connection, then tell my computer "Hey, here's a secure connection, please throw whatever packets you have at it."

The end result is something similar to a SOCKS5 proxy, which is technically what it is.

What I experimented today in school is doing VNC over SSH, which technically isn't very difficult if you're on Linux, but it's a little more hairy on Windows. Thankfully there are already tons of guides out there so it really isn't that hard.

However, as it's still under the advanced section, I shall draw a diagram, to help myself understand.

The BLUE refers to my SSH connection to 1 of my routers. Here, I could have set up a tunnel that I could push my web traffic through. (a single port)
The GREEN is the interesting part. I am using the blue connection to tell the router, "Hey, I need to talk to that computer at home, set up a link between a port on my home computer, and a port on my laptop." (but the router doesn't know it's doing that)
The ORANGE refers to the actual path of the traffic.

I would point to the defined port on my locahost, and it will be redirected to my computer at home as it is "linked". However, my green connection is still encapsulated within my blue connection. So it's kind of like a tunnel within a tunnel.

And with that, I would've finish setting up a VNC connection to my home computer through a SSH tunnel. I tried it with FTP but I screwed something up and kept getting request time-outs. I'll fix it tomorrow though.

Yes, there is a practical application. I did a test run on my FYP project using this link in school. The end.

Rant: People are annoying
Monday, January 28, 2013

Have you ever been on a bus? Yes? Good.
Have you ever have to alight from the bus? Yes? Good.
Have you ever waited for someone else to press the bell instead of pressing it yourself? Yes? Fuck you.

Sometimes I don't get it. Why will the entire bus just wait for a single person to press the bell? Are you that lazy to simply press that fucking button? Are you losing out on something?! I see a whole bunch of people looking all anxious and nervous on their seats, thinking that no one might press the bell, and that they wouldn't press it until the last second possible.

I mean, it's alright to be a little lazy and wait for someone to press the bell instead. But when I see a bus full of people that are obviously alighting on the same stop, and that no one presses the bell until the bus is like 20 meters away from the stop, it gets on my nerves.

What about me? I'm obviously texting or doing something on my phone. Or I'll usually press the bell.

I don't know man, why are people so anal?
