FFT: Where is the limit of technology?

FFT: Food For Thought

Should have used this phrase way earlier, but the other articles were written based on my mood and what happened to be on my mind. This time, I actually thought about it for awhile.

As you have probably noticed, technology has been advancing at an alarming rate. There doesn't seem to be anything to stop it. Every time you think that your life is all fine and dandy, something amazing pops out, making you want something you never knew you wanted.

A good example is your phone. Do you really need a phone that has 4 cores with all the crazy speed? Nope. You really don't need that for a phone. Until someone said, "Hey! We could make really addictive games on it."

Your computers are also way faster than you really need them to be.

Even so, computing speed has been increasing pretty linearly and your internet is getting even faster. What are we going to do with all that technology? Instead of words, let the videos do the talking instead.

Google's Project Glass

Corning's A day made of Glass

Corning's A day made of Glass 2

Of course, we have really ingenius people trolling the public with their amazing 3D no-glass technology.

Other than the last video, the others are really close within our grasp. If they really want to invest in it, you could see all those in 5 years. It's so cool that you want all of it to happen right now, the way forward is of course all the science fiction things that you can think of, like telepresence, teleportation, holograph movies and such.

However, what's at the end of it? Or is there really an end?
I think there is.

I think that, the ultimate technology is to be able to replicate reality. Which means that, we would be able to create a space where you can virtualize space, feeling, food, people. Basically we can manipulate the atoms to artificially create a world that is no different from reality.

Now, would you call that a fake, virtual world; or reality? Since everything is "made" by us, we can in fact, be Gods. Since we can create humans at will, each having their own personality and will. The ultimate technology. Let's say we manage to achieve that.

Can you think of any other thing greater than that?

I can't. I think that's the limit of human imagination. There may be something beyond that, but I am unable to imagine it. I'm bounded by the idea of God. It's hard to imagine something greater than that. Maybe millions, billions of years into the future, we will all be really bored with life because we could do anything, literally.

Maybe then, we would reset everything and we'll be back to where we started.

Ridiculous rate of information consumption. Difficulty in understanding people due to difference in eras.
Tuesday, June 19, 2012

I have been watching shows/animes that are related to wars, or very different timelines. From far back in the medieval times, like Game of Thrones, to beyond the future, like Doctor Who, or tons other crazy animes. They all featured fighting.

Wars. I will never understand them.

I've watched countless of war films, documentaries, movies, or science fiction. Star Wars for example. I get how scary it can be, but I will never understand the fear, the desperation, the lack of hope experienced by those people. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."

It's times like these I feel jaded, thankful to the "more rational" society these days, many kids like me are able to live in a world fairly free from conflict and death.

Which means that I can never understand what my parents have went through in the past. Yes, they are old enough to at least experienced the ending of World War 2. They have told me stories of when they were kids, how they had to hide into bomb shelters as such. Can I ever imagine that feeling? Frankly speaking, no. There's no way I know the feeling of being on the brink of death, the possibility of dying without any warning whatsoever.

Can any of my friends understand that? I doubt so. Having little to no food, being oppressed by an army, even though you had done nothing wrong, you're just caught in the middle of it. The unfairness of the world that we are blissfully ignorant of.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's excellent that my generation of people can live in such a wonderful world. There are many other problems lurking around, but just being able to be ignorant of wars? I'll take that any day.

I really don't think my parents will understand how I think either. Me, who has been sheltered all my life, thanks to the blood and sweat that they had expended in the past. I would go as far as to say that I've been born with a bronze spoon. (Silver is out of my reach) There are so many things that I understand the rational behind, but don't get it, like it's not etched into my soul.

A simple example would be,
Don't waste your food.
I know why, I shouldn't do it, it's wrong. I get that it's wrong. But I'm not a farmer. I could barely cook. It's just things that I can never fully grasp.

My grandfather has a fruit plantation, my mother also knows the basics of farming and such. I've even gone to pluck some fruits too. But it's a lifestyle for them (years ago of course), I can never understand that essence of the teaching, "Don't waste your food."

I'm always in front of my computer, and my parents can never understand why I'm doing this. To them, a computer is simply a tool to get work done. Internet is just a way to send some image/text/video to someone else. However, it means so much more to me. I probably can't live without internet or computer for more than a week.
(well I could, but it's like detoxing, it would be hell)

So far, I've been using my parents as examples. Which has worked so far. I realized however, that generation gaps doesn't have to be 40, 30 or even 20 years. In fact, from what I have observed, it could be as close as 10years or less.

Cartoons, are a prime example to showcase that gap.

Here are some openings to the cartoons in the 90s. In which you can probably guess my age.

Kids these days will probably hate these. When I try to watch the cartoons that kids watch these days, I just can't get into it. It seemed so stupid.

My point is, it's the kind of environment that these cartoons creates for us. When you think about the times when you were as a kid, the only shows you've watched are probably all cartoons. Real popular ones like Teen Titans, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spongebob Squarepants. Or even further back, something like Teletubbies which I used to love.

Now, another thing that makes people hard to understand is the rate at which they consume information. I've watched a TED talk recently about how we should treat information/media like food. We choose what we eat, to make sure that we're healthy. But we don't practice that same attitude towards info/media, simply put we just absorb everything it has to offer with filtering stuffs.

I complete agree with what he is saying.

Unfortunately, I'm at that stage where any lesser information wouldn't be enough to satisfy my appetite. I feel bored, more often than a normal person would. My brain just can't seem to handle idle time very well.

If you're too lazy to watch that, I'll try to summarize it for you, or if you did and didn't understand it, hopefully this would help.

People consume information at a crazy rate these days, the information we get in a day is probably more than what people would in their lifetime centuries ago. We should start filtering out the stuffs that we actually need. Treat it like food, don't just gobble everything down, pick and choose what is good for you.

If you don't believe that 1 day of information is more than a person's lifetime, think about this.

You know that the Earth is round, you also know the circumference and size, because of the various sources you have. It would take someone years, decades of observation and calculation to know that. You can learn all of it, within an hour if you wish. Google it, read the research papers and calculations. There, a man's life of research into your head.

You see where I"m going with this, right?

These days, I can't sit down for 10mins without anything happening. In my holidays, I've spend most of my time reading articles, watching videos, learning about random stuff as fast as humanly possible.

Ranging from physics, to chemistry to astronomy to computer science to sociology to history to biology to computing technologies to etc. Yes, that's what I've been spending my time doing. I probably retain less than 10% of the information, but they would probably sound familiar when and if I need to go deeper into those topics.

Of course, this is a bit of an extreme case, but you, who have been reading this is also consuming an incredible amount of information. By reading this, you've gained a new perspective on things, you've learnt to see info/media in a different light, you're stressing the cognitive regions of your brains, and improving upon those skills. All of that, just by staring at a screen.

Here's my main point.

It's close to impossible to understand another person.

Unless you lived in the same generation, lived in similar conditions, had the same education, consumed the same information. And this is ignoring intelligence and all the personality quirks.

The most you can do is to get what he/she is trying to convey. Put in another way, unless you've walked in the same shoes, you won't get it. Anyone that has been slapped before knows how bad it feels (a good proper one, not just one for fun). Try explaining it to someone who has never been slapped before. It hurts, but there's a strange feeling of unexplained humiliation.

I'm writing this probably because I'm starting to have trouble understanding people, or myself even. Like a lost and confused kid amidst all these chaos and randomness.

Sigh, why do people have to be so complicated?

Being a gentleman, or not.
Monday, May 21, 2012

To be or not to be.

My friend prompted me to think about this dreaded topic couple of weeks ago. I live in a country called Singapore, everyone is perpetually busy and going around doing their own things. There has been quite a bit of debate going on.

Actually, there is no debate, just a one sided bashing from the female population.

Singapore guys are not gentlemanly.
A.K.A., no chivalry.

I said there's no debate because truth is if the guy isn't interested in you, he can't be bothered to argue with that point. Hence, our argument is, "No, we're not ungentlemanly". Which... really isn't an argument all on it's own.

My friend isn't the first one to complain about it. During my internship, my colleagues decided to talk about that topic on my first day of work. Yeah, those aunties were trying to make my life hard. What kind of a conversational topic is that for a virgin intern?

Anyway, I Googlged Chivalry and Gentleman.

I'm happily depressed, depressingly happy.
Saturday, May 19, 2012

I'm really supposed to be sleeping at 2:46AM, but I feel like I'll forget everything when I wake up in the morning so I'm writing them down now.

I suggest not reading this post unless you're really bored, or if you're really interested in my thoughts. Because it's probably going to be pretty confusing, even for me. Since I'm really just jotting down my thoughts.

The feeling of not belonging
Thursday, May 10, 2012

I usually write about thoughts, hopefully interesting ones. Rarely if not never, have I written my heart felt feelings on this blog, for it is how the world will view me as an individual, from now, till eternity. (Since your presence on the web can't really be measured, who knows what happens to all these data when I'm dead?)

So recently, for the first time in my life, I truly felt like I do not belong to a place where I'm... technically part of.

To be precise, it's my involvement in the skates club. Yes, I'm in the skates club if I did not mention before. I don't go there often, in fact for a rather long period of time I was an invisible man! However, thanks to a change in my timetable, it is now relatively convenient for me to participate again.

Let me first describe the situation, then how it feels, followed by my very logical explanation which I'm sure you will all doubt but accept in the end.

1. The situation
There are 3 types of skating: aggressive, sliding and slalom. I chose slalom because... I'm graceful as a swan. Of course, this would mean that during training, we will be split into 3 groups as there are different requirements.

We'll ignore the aggressive skaters because, they don't train in the same area. So between the 2 S-es. My group is the minority, don't bother asking why, it just is.

When I turn up, I'll just hang with the my homies. It's not that I don't know the sliders(other group), they're more of acquaintances than friends, except for a few. But in general, my "group" have pretty much nothing to do with them.

What would you attempt to do, if you could not fail?
Tuesday, April 03, 2012

This is an interesting video.

If you hadn't known about all these, I'm pretty sure all these technology advancement will absolutely blow your mind. Well... I've been following all the tech news daily, so this is pretty... old?

Either way, DARPA is a US government funded military organisation. As you can probably imagine, a lot of the technologies can be, and probably will be used for military purposes. She's the head, or was, because she has transferred to Google, doing an undisclosed job. (i'm really curious)

I'm not going to talk about those things. But she has left a very powerful thought in my head.

"What will I attempt to do, if I could not fail?"

I thought about it.

Something about the story I was writing months back
Friday, February 24, 2012

I'm sorry.

I really have no idea how I'm going to continue the story. Because well, I was testing out a new way of writing, apparently it doesn't work very well with me because the words didn't flow out the way I had hoped.

So.. instead of writing out the proper ending. Let me just tell you what my plan was for it.

In case you haven't read it yet, here's Chapter 1 & Chapter 2.

So the ending goes like this.
Leo realized that his aunt he was living with doesn't like him. She tried to chase him out. They had a fight. He left the house because he couldn't take it anymore.

He fell asleep on the streets. The black monster of her aunt appears and they fought. He was gravely injured and his entire world was engulfed in darkness. Lia managed to defeat the monster, but was fatally injured. In order to save her, he made a contract with her to give him his remaining life. (this part wasn't very well thought out so I didn't know how to write it).

The final part is, because Leo gave up his remaining life for her, he is essentially dead, but he will always be living together with Lia. (in that so-called alternate world)

So yes, I have the idea in mind but I'm unable to put it into words. Which is why even when I type it out like this it's still kind of awkward and confusing.

There is a point to this story though. An idea. That is,

You are not alone.

No matter how shitty your world is, no matter how badly it got fucked, there is always someone for you. Even if there is no one at all in the world left, you'll always have yourself. There's always an inner you (subconscious) who is always trying to help you.

I guess my message is,
No matter what happens, don't give up on yourself.

Why jerks get the girls
Tuesday, February 21, 2012

I've been thinking about this for awhile and I've figured it out. But I never really could put them into words very clearly.

This however, changed while I was reading a book today. Well, technically it isn't a book since I read it on my phone, but whatever, let's skip over the details and move on to the big picture.

Girls, you can say whatever you like, but you know that you always fall for jerks. That's the fact of the matter. And guys? Trust me, I'm a jerk too nice of a dude.

There are two ways of looking at this.

The normal way is, "girls like bad boys". Technically, that isn't wrong. But I'm not going into that today. What I'll be talking about, is called  CONTRAST.

It's only after you've been a giant dickhead that people will appreciate the nice gestures that you do.

Expanding on my theory of the Big Bang
Monday, December 19, 2011

I wrote my theory of how the universe began previously.
If you haven't read it yet, it's over here.

Note that it was simply something that I wanted to share at that moment. I realized that there are some parts that I left out which I only found when I read it again, and realize that everything made sense. It shouldn't make sense, the reality is way more complex than I can ever possibly imagine.

Here's why.

As I've said in the previous post, when something is observed, it becomes a reality, which is why anything is possible if it is not observed. Hence,

Anything that can happen,
will happen, and has happened.

Which is basically my theory for what happened before the Big Bang. There was simply nothing, and since there was nothing to observe it, our universe simply "popped up" from no where. To put it simply, the moment you observe something, that something becomes reality.

Now, I also mentioned that the universe with nothing but space in it, and ours, which is filled with stars burning, can both exist at the same time.

However, since the unobserved universe is still there, it meant that it could spawn an infinite amount of universes.

Hence, the multiverse. And also parallel universes. Where everything could be the same as ours, just slightly different. Like, maybe the dodo bird isn't extinct, or Hitler took over the world. Up till now, I've been talking about universes. Which, basically, encompasses all of reality itself, but it's kind of a physical thing.

The thing about quantum physics is that every single action, every single decision we make will create it's own line of reality.

Imagine universes as bubbles, it could be of any size or shape, but since there's an infinite amount of it, there will definitely be ones that are similar to ours.
Now, imagine our actions as a branch inside the bubbles. Each action sprouts a new branch or reality itself, but it still within the bubble.

That is my version of the Unified Theory.

The thing is, math and physics generally do not like infinity. Usually, when you have infinity in your answers, it means you're wrong. Because we cannot fathom the idea of infinity. Seriously, just think about it for a second, our brains just could not understand it.

Even so, I do believe that this theory manages to explain all of the stuffs that we can't understand. Of course, I can't put it into math equations, but the logic itself seems to work.

This is why maturity sucks
Monday, October 10, 2011

I shall not do _____ cause it's immature.

I'm sure that's one line we're all familiar with. Unless you're an immature, selfish and childish asshole who goes around pissing everyone off. This goes without saying that I'm writing this for matured people, so if you're a 10 year old kid or younger, piss off. Again, I'm just being immature by saying that.

Here's 3 reasons why maturity sucks.

  1. It stops you from doing what you want to do.
  2. It makes you get annoyed at people who haven't attain your level of enlightenment.
  3. It makes no sense when you really think about it.
