Geek: Image recovery fun
Monday, September 17, 2012

You have probably watch shows that features some ridiculous image recovery and enhancing capabilities. Even though most of them are greatly exaggerated, there is some truth to it. In this post I'm going to show how much detail there are in the images that you've taken.

Disclaimer: This is done to show the proof of concept and not as a tutorial of how do it. Though I will briefly discuss the techniques. p.s I promise not to use it for evil.

Due to how creepy it would be to edit some random person's pictures, I shall find some of my really old pictures and use them instead.

This was taken in the cinema some many years ago, as you can see, or not see rather, this is a really screwed up image.

But after just a little bit tweaks here and there.

Granted, you could recover most of the details just by bumping the brightness up. (you'll be surprised) But most of the work comes between the balancing of details vs noise. When you switch to black and white, you get a little bit more leeway and will easily recreate the image like this.

Of course, that is really noisy, but it's alright for b/w images. It could be a little better, I apply a noise filter. It reduces the noise, but the trade off is lesser details as you can see.

If you're using photoshop or any other image editing programs, one thing to look out for is the histogram. (or levels) This shows the amount of light (data) that's within the image.

From this graph, you could tell where the light is gathered at. For this example, you can tell that most of the light data is at the darker end of the spectrum. Which means that all highlight and midtones are practically gone. As you can tell from the image, it is very flat, with little to no dynamic range. That's because all the data is recovered from the "black" side of the image.

Here's a before and after to illustrate what I've done so far.

Left: Before | Right: After

(Sorry I had to take a random image from facebook.) Well, there is a limit to what you can do if the image isn't taken well in the first place. If you're using a cellphone, and it doesn't have a decently sized sensor (5MP and above), chances are that there are not enough details and you're screwed either way. An example will be this following image.

There is a limit of what you can achieve with this, but the results are still pretty amazing. Suddenly you can tell the shape of the shades, you could tell the features of the chair, and you could tell that they are in a 4D cinema or something similar.

All I can say that this is a powerful tool if used for creepiness. Stalking people and uncovering details they did not intend is fun, but you know, it's creepy as hell.

These are actually all very simple. Once you have the fundamental understanding of how light works,  how your camera (sensor) captures the light and how your computer interprets it, this is pretty much a piece of cake. Most photographers out there could do this in their sleep probably. I'm just guessing that most people wouldn't know that so much raw data is actually in the images that they've uploaded. I'm not trying to scare you or anything, I just thought it's good to know.

Oh also, if you've heard of raw images, those are even more fun to play around with. As the name implies, it captures raw light data and lets the computer interpret it. Which is why the file sizes are usually pretty big. 20+MB per image. However, because there are no compression involved, you preserve most of the data and you can do amazing stuff with it.

So... you know, just don't use this for evil.

Daily Photo #114 - Reverse Bungee
Monday, July 30, 2012

Prepare for blastoff!

It's not like I'm extremely busy or anything, it just seems like everyday, before I realize it, it's time to sleep. Don't know if that made sense, but it's just how it is!

Last Friday my friends wanted to try the reverse bungee at clarke quay. I gladly obliged to go along for dinner, but no way in hell I'm paying money to scare the shit out of my pants. I've never been fond of amusement rides, mainly because I have motion sickness and all the unnecessary movements is literally hell for me.

They're (my friends) are a crazy bunch of people because they took both rides, 1 that shoots them up directly, and another which swings them from a ridiculously high place.

videos will be up when my friend finish editing it or something.

As you can see, they are shot really high up in the air spinning at the same time.

Then they took the swing, which has this really long ascending period.

Going up

At the top

Waiting for trigger

The interesting thing about this ride is that the person riding has to press the trigger to go down. They described it as: "Because you're facing down, you're only supported by your seat harness and it feels like you're gonna drop out anytime." Damn, I get the shudders just thinking about it.

As they press the release they swing violently from the top to the other side, which is hard to describe or photograph, so have fun waiting for the video. (p.s. all these are snapshots from the videos)

We then went to Saizeriya at Liang Court for dinner and some of them were acting like drunkards even though not a single drop of alcohol was in sight.

This was an interesting outing with new additions to the group, I look forward to more of these.

Thinking: This KPOP video amused me
Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Because KPOP videos are plastered all over youtube and stalking me wherever I go, I happen to click on one, which links to another and another.

Yes, they are beautiful. But everything is so commercialized I just can't express any interest for it.

With reasons unknown to man, my attention was mostly on the camera techniques/angles and the video processing to make how the video look like how it does. Everything seems to flow together very nicely, I loved the colours used in the video, so I thought through it.

It has a very nice "vintage" pastel colour. I am very sure that the colours were chosen very carefully. So much so that each scene can be changed from one to another without a disconnection. If you look at some other kpop videos, you'll understand what I mean by the smoothness. Some are done perfectly like this, some are just jarring and bizarre cuts.

Of course the thing that really amused me is that I couldn't tell one member from another in this video. They looked like clones of each other, literally. Except for 1 member which I can somehow differentiate.

The others? Same face different hair.

Have we reached the end goal of what we deem as beautiful? It's obvious what kind of look that they are aiming for. It's like someone found the solution of beauty, and that there's only 1 solution. (a little bit like anime in some series)

Anyway, it's true that there are features that we deem beautiful on a person, it just seems like they are trying to craft a goddess out of flesh.

FFT: Where is the limit of technology?
Wednesday, June 20, 2012

FFT: Food For Thought

Should have used this phrase way earlier, but the other articles were written based on my mood and what happened to be on my mind. This time, I actually thought about it for awhile.

As you have probably noticed, technology has been advancing at an alarming rate. There doesn't seem to be anything to stop it. Every time you think that your life is all fine and dandy, something amazing pops out, making you want something you never knew you wanted.

A good example is your phone. Do you really need a phone that has 4 cores with all the crazy speed? Nope. You really don't need that for a phone. Until someone said, "Hey! We could make really addictive games on it."

Your computers are also way faster than you really need them to be.

Even so, computing speed has been increasing pretty linearly and your internet is getting even faster. What are we going to do with all that technology? Instead of words, let the videos do the talking instead.

Google's Project Glass

Corning's A day made of Glass

Corning's A day made of Glass 2

Of course, we have really ingenius people trolling the public with their amazing 3D no-glass technology.

Other than the last video, the others are really close within our grasp. If they really want to invest in it, you could see all those in 5 years. It's so cool that you want all of it to happen right now, the way forward is of course all the science fiction things that you can think of, like telepresence, teleportation, holograph movies and such.

However, what's at the end of it? Or is there really an end?
I think there is.

I think that, the ultimate technology is to be able to replicate reality. Which means that, we would be able to create a space where you can virtualize space, feeling, food, people. Basically we can manipulate the atoms to artificially create a world that is no different from reality.

Now, would you call that a fake, virtual world; or reality? Since everything is "made" by us, we can in fact, be Gods. Since we can create humans at will, each having their own personality and will. The ultimate technology. Let's say we manage to achieve that.

Can you think of any other thing greater than that?

I can't. I think that's the limit of human imagination. There may be something beyond that, but I am unable to imagine it. I'm bounded by the idea of God. It's hard to imagine something greater than that. Maybe millions, billions of years into the future, we will all be really bored with life because we could do anything, literally.

Maybe then, we would reset everything and we'll be back to where we started.

Being a gentleman, or not.
Monday, May 21, 2012

To be or not to be.

My friend prompted me to think about this dreaded topic couple of weeks ago. I live in a country called Singapore, everyone is perpetually busy and going around doing their own things. There has been quite a bit of debate going on.

Actually, there is no debate, just a one sided bashing from the female population.

Singapore guys are not gentlemanly.
A.K.A., no chivalry.

I said there's no debate because truth is if the guy isn't interested in you, he can't be bothered to argue with that point. Hence, our argument is, "No, we're not ungentlemanly". Which... really isn't an argument all on it's own.

My friend isn't the first one to complain about it. During my internship, my colleagues decided to talk about that topic on my first day of work. Yeah, those aunties were trying to make my life hard. What kind of a conversational topic is that for a virgin intern?

Anyway, I Googlged Chivalry and Gentleman.

The feeling of not belonging
Thursday, May 10, 2012

I usually write about thoughts, hopefully interesting ones. Rarely if not never, have I written my heart felt feelings on this blog, for it is how the world will view me as an individual, from now, till eternity. (Since your presence on the web can't really be measured, who knows what happens to all these data when I'm dead?)

So recently, for the first time in my life, I truly felt like I do not belong to a place where I'm... technically part of.

To be precise, it's my involvement in the skates club. Yes, I'm in the skates club if I did not mention before. I don't go there often, in fact for a rather long period of time I was an invisible man! However, thanks to a change in my timetable, it is now relatively convenient for me to participate again.

Let me first describe the situation, then how it feels, followed by my very logical explanation which I'm sure you will all doubt but accept in the end.

1. The situation
There are 3 types of skating: aggressive, sliding and slalom. I chose slalom because... I'm graceful as a swan. Of course, this would mean that during training, we will be split into 3 groups as there are different requirements.

We'll ignore the aggressive skaters because, they don't train in the same area. So between the 2 S-es. My group is the minority, don't bother asking why, it just is.

When I turn up, I'll just hang with the my homies. It's not that I don't know the sliders(other group), they're more of acquaintances than friends, except for a few. But in general, my "group" have pretty much nothing to do with them.

Frame of mind
Sunday, April 22, 2012

I love this video!

It's a whirlpool mixture of creativity! I like the fast paced nature of it too. The weekends are moving really slowly, there were supposed to be a heated discussion for my FYP, but of course, things never ever does go smoothly when it comes to online collaboration.

Little Awesome Things
Monday, April 16, 2012

HELLO PEOPLE.

I'm going to try another project about blogging, once again. Is it going to work? I don't know, but at least this time it wouldn't fail from the lack of posts, because I'll be using tumblr.

http://littleawesomethings.tumblr.com

If you want to contribute to it, tell me using whatever ways you know of. I'll give you an email, which you could post directly to it. If emailing is too hard for you, then you could simply go to.

http://littleawesomethings.tumblr.com/submit

Write about something awesome, and click submit! It might take awhile for it to get up there cause I'll have have to click okay and stuffs, but you get the idea.

What is Little Awesome Things about?

It's about the little things in life that counts. The little little things that makes you happy. For example, this morning, I woke up 5 mins before my alarm, and I felt refreshed. It brightened up my day, in it's own tiny little ways. I want to collect all the little things in life that makes people happy.

What's the point of this?

When I'm feeling down, I want to have a place to go to, to remind myself that sometimes it's not the big things in life that makes all the difference. Sometimes, it's just the tiny things that lights a smile on your face. I want to bring that feeling to other people too!

Maybe a month or two down the road, I could read back on all the posts, smiling about the little awesome things that made me happy.

Hopefully it'll succeed this time. As they said, the third time is the charm.

End of 6 weeks ITP
Saturday, April 14, 2012

I'm finally free from the hassles of a work life.

There's this lingering vegeance towards my school for taking away our well-deserved rest. But well, there's no point crying over spilt milk.

Here's a summary of what happened on Friday.

Ate Astons, Haagen Dazs, Ichiban.
Climbed down 26 storeys.

Finally reached the first floor
Why?Because we felt like it. Apparently there's another retard who wanted to try doing it, cause we didn't get to the other day during the fire drill.

Well, I've never climbed the stairs from such a high level before, so it's kind of a "why not?".

If I were to describe it with one word; fun, isn't the one I'll use. It is, however, a really interesting experience.

I actually planned to write something really interesting today. But you know, I still haven't recover yet. Damn this flu of mine. I should really stop sleeping late. Oh, I slept late yesterday cause I fucked up my phone really bad. Got stuck in a boot loop. Couldn't boot into recovery. But well, after an hour or two, finally managed to revive it and it's up and running.

In short, fuck this shit I need some sleep.

Girlfriends for hire?
Friday, April 06, 2012

No, I'm not trying to hire a girlfriend.

There's an answer though, for all your girlfriend problems
(or the lack thereof)

http://www.girlfriendhire.com/

I'm as serious as when I told you I'm awesome. Basically you can hire someone for $5 to pretend to be your girlfriend. On social networks, or text you, or call you, or do homework (holy crap!) for you.

Let me just type a few interesting ones I've seen on the front page.

I will teach you HTML for $5
I will teach you rudimentary analytical logic for $5
I will be your clingy fake gf via Facebook and/or texts for $5.
I will teach you proper English AND Slang for $5
I will send you flirty text messages for $5.
I will talk to you for whatever is on your mind for $5.
I will answer ANY questions you have about girls for $5.

You know, when you look past how retarded this is, I really think that being able to hire a tutor for $5 to teach you whatever things, seems like a pretty good deal. Furthermore, you can be absolutely certain that your tutor will be of the opposite gender.

Is there a male version of this service? It's in beta, so you can rest assure that they're trying.

All jokes aside, I really do think that whoever who came up with this idea is really clever. As long as this doesn't turn into some sluts for hire website, it might actually become some ridiculous educational website. Or a really awesome one used to prank people

I just wanted to share it, hopefully I can change your life, from this, to this.

Daily Photo #83 - More sex is safer sex
Saturday, March 31, 2012

I agree

I saw this book during a random book sale at Suntec. I thought it was interesting, and it could serve as a reminder to my future self.

If you've been wondering why I haven't post in the past 2 days, the answer is simple. I fell asleep before I could write it. Or technically it wasn't possible to write on the day. Cause when I saw that the time was after 12am, I was like "screw it there's no point anymore"

Hence, this shall be a very short post because my earphones finally arrived, and it's pretty awesome. The review is coming right up!

Sentenced to confinement

Yes, that is where I spend 9 hours in. Okay minus the lunch and screwing around. Maybe 7+.

This is kind of my idea of the job I won't want to get in my life. Being trapped in a tiny cubicle with mountains of paper. Sadly, that's the situation I'm finding myself in. This is already considered very neat as I was already packing up.

During work, there will be paper all over the table. My supervisor came over today and said, "You know that this is your space, you can arrange it however you want, but isn't it a little too messy?"

Brown scotch tape art
Wednesday, January 04, 2012

This is so beautiful it's unreal.

As to why I'm posting at 8am in the morning. It's simply because I'm waiting for lessons to start. I'm so tired I think I could fall asleep any second now.

Honestly though, why the hell does this course has to start at 8 everyday when the others can live with a better timing?

I'm rambling on because I'm grumpy in the morning. Screw this shit. Oh fml.
