After what seemed like forever, I finally got my fiber optic connection to the internet.


With 100mbps downstream and 50up, I feel like a more integral part of the internet. Of course, these results can only be gotten when connecting within the country, and through wire. When you make the switch to wireless, the speeds drop dramatically, even more so when you're not within the same room.

After a lot of tinkering, I finally managed to get my wireless connection speed to something decent in my room. (as the wireless router is outside in the hall). Achieving a connection speed of between 40~58mbps. Of course, due to all the overhead and extra bullshit too long to be explained, the actual internet speed is only about 12~18mbps.

Now, Mb/s stands for megabits per second, the speeds you see when downloading files is MB/s which stands for megabytes per second. The upper or lower case is very important, as 8 Megabits = 1 Megabyte.

Now, you might be wondering, why the hell do people use megabits since most of the things around us are written as megabytes. Well, that's partly due to the evolution of operating systems and how they count the data, and some marketing bull-shittery.

Okay let me explain a little about bits.

You know that a computer works using binary coding right? Which means that it operates based on 0s and 1s. For example, 1010 = 10, 1100 = 12, 110001100 = 198. Each digit is a single bit that is either a 1 or 0. There is a lot of fascinating things about it so read up on it if you're' interested.

1 Megabit, refers to 1 million bits. Which means that if you have a 10mbps connection, your network is actually capable of transferring 10MILLION ZEROs OR ONEs PER SECOND. Per second, can you even imagine how blistering fast that is?

Technology is amazing and that's why I love it.

Now for some ranting and relatively geeky section.
I can't believe how anal Starhub is with their routers. I wasn't able to connect my own and access the internet easily. Which was no problem if the wireless router they provided wasn't so unnecessarily lousy. I'm just a room away and the connection was basically shit.

My own routers for some reason couldn't take a private IP address as it's WAN address without fucking up it's wireless radios and giving me errors the entire time.

I didn't feel like using an old router with such a new network (even though it's running DD-WRT), after some research I finally decided to flash my new TP-LINK WDR4300 with OpenWRT. Which worked pretty flawlessly. That router is now running a custom version of Linux, which says a lot about how much customizability is given to it. The wireless is now running smoothly and internet is functioning well as well.

Unfortunately not all is well as most of the things are manual, using CLI more often that I would prefer. Even so, the amount of freedom with a good software is limitless. I shall be experimenting like crazy as much as I could.

Exams are starting next week. Oh well.

Geek: Organizing my files

yeah I know my table's really messy.

Not the most flattering shot of my working area, but you know, not the main point of my illustration.

To all my friends that I've been neglecting, This is what I'm busy with. I recently bought a NAS, and sadly I'm not ready to write a review yet. The model is Western Digital My Book  Live Duo which cost me a heart breaking $509. It's a 4TB NAS that holds 2 2TB drives.

I still have another 250GB and 500GB drives chucked somewhere, but well, those are for another day.

Even though it's nothing worth bragging about, I just got really amused when I open up my computer and saw this.

The 1.8TB is just total capacity. Both drives total only 1.8TB

It's that geek excitement you get when you manage to set up everything perfectly.

What's the point of all these?
Basically, I've gotten a hard drive, for the network. So,
I can share files with the entire house effortlessly.
I can create users and passwords.
I can assign folders for people in the house.
I can stream media on any device from the network.

The manager of the cafe told me that the alpha male monkey noticed me the second I walked in the door and started going crazy, because, as the alpha male, he feels threatened by tall males. So she told me to go stand by the window and turn my back on him and that he would "attack" me...

Well, that was one hell of an awesome attack.

Swim off the edge?

As you can see, it is a beautiful view.

It's a stupid story how I ended up staying the night at MBS, Simply put, my friend had a room, but no one else. So being a nice guy I decided to just keep him company so that he wouldn't be weirded out by ghosts. Of course, it's also because he's been my friend for over 10years. Yes, another one, it's not surprising is it?

Well, the bed is large and comfortable. But it's annoying. Because without the blanket, it's too cold, but it's too warm under it. So I had a hell of a time trying to get to sleep.

We actually didn't do much. I came from a so called "farewell" gathering with my gay buddies, it was after 12 and I was tired as hell.

Here's the other thing, the bottles of water that they say are "complementary"? Do not drink them. I'm serious.

They're drugged.

I swear I'm honest, it makes you thirsty when you drink them. So it forces you to buy drinks from them. Seeing as how a coke costs 7bucks, you really don't want to mess with this shit.

I'm not lying.

The interesting part, of course, comes next morning when we had the opportunity to visit the sky garden.

Holy crap my HSDPA+ is fast

I took a random speed test this morning as I was reading about networks and stuffs.

Unbelievably, I scored a 622.7KB/s for my download. Of course, it's rather early and there probably isn't a lot of people using the network so it'll be fast (yes, it works that way). Still, I'm really amazed by it. The highest I've ever gotten is roughly 500KB/s.

Ah, technology. Making me feel happier and happier each and everyday.

I ended up celebrating my birthday after all

Well, you know the types of people who don’t really celebrate stuffs because they don’t really see the point of it? I’m one of these people. I mean, it’s not like I hate it or anything, it just doesn’t seem compelling enough. Or maybe it’s the way I was brought up.

I mean like, to ask people to come and celebrate the birth of you is kinda, ehhh~

Still, like the saying goes, “If you expect too much, you’ll be disappointed. If you don’t expect anything, you’ll always be pleasantly surprised.”

This is one of the times that I was really pleasantly surprised.

My mum cooked quite a lot and I saw that it was good. Well, mainly due the the amount of chicken that was available. ^^

It arrived 2 days early. (from the estimated time) I was spring cleaning today, and I'll take it as my reward. Okay, people have been asking,

What is a SSD?

A solid-state drive (SSD), sometimes called a solid-state disk or electronic disk, is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data with the intention of providing access in the same manner of a traditional block i/o hard disk drive. SSDs are distinguished from traditional magnetic disks such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or floppy disk, which are electromechanical devices containing spinning disks and movable read/write heads. In contrast, SSDs use microchips that retain data in non-volatile memory chips and contain no moving parts.Compared to electromechanical HDDs, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, are silent, have lower access time and latency, but are more expensive per gigabyte (GB). SSDs use the same interface as hard disk drives, thus easily replacing them in most applications.


Okok I put it in layman's terms for you.

It's way faster than traditional hard drives because it isn't mechanical, electricity is faster than a spinning disk yes? 

But of course, it's expen$ive.

To the point where it's $2.20 per GB. Where else a traditional hard drive, is roughly $0.09 per GB. That's how big the difference is. (this SSD cost $265)

Now, what would justify this ridiculous cost?

Well, your hard drive, could probably do a maximum of 130MB/s in burst rate (starting), then slowing down to roughly 60~80MB/s sequential (after the starting) for desktops. Laptops are considerably slower of course. What can this drive achieve?

550MB/s burst rate.
220+ MB/s sequential.

Well, the rest are just.. screws and paper so it's not interesting. But yeah! I didn't bother taking pictures of the installation because it's just changing hard drives, nothing fanciful. But! When I was done, I did a quick windows benchmark.



For the first time in my life, the score is actually bounded by the RAM. What the heck. The maximum score is 7.9 btw. Also, this is a laptop.

Look at your score, now back at mine, now back at yours, now back at mine. Is your Disk data transfer rate as awesome as mine? No. But can it be as awesome as mine? Yes. Only if you change to an SSD, the hard drive that geeks use.

The real world benefits are tremendous. Booting up in roughly 20s, opening office documents takes roughly 1 second. Everything is just really snappy. Snap snap snap!

Okay on the serious side, even though this is a great upgrade, and if you're dying to get one, please, check your motherboard. If it's the intel 5 series motherboard, you might wanna think twice because you need to do a considerable amount of tweaks to get it running at full capacity. Also, it will increase your system temperature by a few degrees.

I know that because I have the same problem. I googled all the problems before getting one, and after all the tweaks, all's well and fine. So here's a geek advice.

Do your research before making any huge investment.

Hello! I've finally bought a domain after so many years of blogging.

It's officially LordofGeeks.com

Of course, since I'm still using blogger to host it, you could always visit lordofgeek.blogspot.com. Which will simply redirect you to the .com website.

Now why the extra S you ask? Because lordofgeek was taken! Though it's not used, it's kind of in a suspended state so I can't really contend for it, it'll be a little more expensive if I tried to. Either way, this marks a rather significant checkpoint in my writing life.

I"ve been thinking about it for years but finally the price seemed cheap enough for me to just go ahead and do it. In case you're wondering, it costs 10USD / year. Of course, since I'm using Google (Blogger) to host the website itself, so I do not have to pay for the web server fees (:

Of course, you can expect a huge wave of updates in the following weeks (or months since school is starting soon). I am really excited about this, it's like

IT'S SO FLUFFY!!!

Kind of excitement.

Well, there's a good reason behind why I'm so excited. Because getting a domain through Google allows you access to Google Apps. What's so interesting about that? Well.

For example, I can now create emails under @lordofgeeks.com
(though you should probably be able to do that with other services, the great thing about this is that it's actually under Gmail!)

And also, I'm going to start putting up ads. Hopefully, it'll cover the cost of the domain in the next year. I'm not really expecting to earn much from it. Though I'll now start to promote this little website more than ever!

This is probably the stupidest, and hardest shot I've ever taken.

It's a screen (monitor), inside a screen (galaxy S), inside a screen (galaxy S2), inside a screen (HX9V) , inside a screen (Lumix FZ28).  Though the last screen can't be seen since it's the photo itself. There's another camera but I find that, it's impossible to do this without another tripod, and I don't. So.. Yes. This is my limit.

But yeah. I've finally gotten my hands on a build of ICS. Or for those who don't know what it is, it's the next major version of Android (4.0.1).

Yes yes, I'm sorry for posting pictures of my awesome phone again. But, well, I HAD to write about this because I AM the LordofGeek after all. So for those still stuck on those old outdated firmwares, here is me laughing at you.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Well, all jokes aside, here's my thoughts on ICS. It's still in Beta at the moment but most of the things are working already so it's rather snappy. I mean like, faster than optimized Gingerbread (2.3.3 ~ 2.3.7) snappy.

I probably want to develop some app on it, but well, maybe in the holidays when I have the time and energy to do it.

Oh well, I felt like I had to bitch about my schedule.

Today, lab test in the morning, followed by presentation, followed by another lab test.
Tomorrow, lab test in the morning.
Day after, lab test in the morning, followed by another lab test, followed by another quiz, followed by another 

Next week, exams. OHHHHH MOTHER OF GOD. Well, so far I haven't screwed up the tests yet. I think? So yeah, KEEP IT UP MAN.

HELL YEAH! My phone have finally came back to daddy :D Okay, it was pretty fast, it took them 3 days to repair the USB port, which, well, frankly isn't that hard but still, I commend them for their effort in repairing their Lord's tools.

The only annoying part is that, the S charges from the top, while the S2 charges from the bottom. Not that it's that bad or what but, you know, I could see how this could prove to be a logistic problem for me when I keep alternating between them.

So.. Well, you could tell that this was a rushed post. 2 labtests tomorrow. Time for some last minute cramming. Then, if I have the time, play with my phones.

Oh you noticed that extra S? Well, Galaxy S. Galaxy S2. You get the drift.
